Recruitment Process

Note: The timelines below are a guide only. You will be contacted if these estimations will be dramatically extended.

Adverts and Registration

You have seen a vacancy within Auckland Transport that looks just like what you have been searching for. You have the skills and experience and think why not join an organisation where your career could take on a whole new journey.

You make the decision to go through the application process and fill in our registration form where you tell us what your skills are and the level of experience you have. You may have even been sent a job alert because you have registered on our site www.aucklandtransportcareers.govt.nz where you can choose to have jobs emailed to you. Its an option we highly recommend because its takes a lot of the hardwork out of finding the job you have been searching for!

Application

After all the searching and waiting you've finally seen the job you want available at Auckland Transport so you take the leap and apply... once you have filled in all the details you will be attached to the job. Take note of when the advertisement will be closing, this gives you an idea of timelines and when you can expect to hear from us. We try to screen all applicants within 3 to 5 days of the role closing, depending on the level of response. Either way you should receive notice of where you stand after 5 days of the advertisement closing.

You will receive an email from the recruitment team stating whether you have made it through the first round of shortlisting. Don't be disheartened if it doesn't go your way the first time round, many people apply numerous times before they successfully find the right role for them in Auckland Transport. We expect that from the date the job closes the recruitment process should take no longer than 4 weeks.

Shortlist

Estimated days from job closing = 3-5

Now you have received the email stating you have made the shortlist, what does this mean for you? Making the first shortlist, which usually includes 5-8 applications, means the recruitment team feels you match the criteria needed and we would like to put your application in front of the hiring manager for that role. We will then work with the hiring manager to cut this list down to our top 3-4 for interviews, there are times when we will call you to ask further questions to help us make final decisions. Use this phone conversation as a chance to sell yourself and get through the next round of shortlisting to interview stage.

First Interview

Estimated days from job closing 10-12

Don't be nervous about coming in to meet with us, remember if you have the skills and experience we are after, Auckland Transport needs you and this is your chance to confirm that! We've already gone through the process of reviewing all applications to get you to this stage so we know you have something to offer. We'll ask you what you know about us and tell you a little bit more about the role you have applied for. We will then go through a set of questions based around the competencies required for that specific role like "decision making, planning" it will all depend on the role you have applied for. We try not to make you feel like you are in an interrogation room and our interviews should not take longer than 45-60 minutes. You will be interviewed by the hiring manager and another senior person or one of the recruitment team. Relax and let us get to know you!

Psychometric Testing

Estimated days since job closing 12-14

If you get through the interview we may ask you to do some psychometric testing depending on the role. Its not as scary as it sounds, this is an opportunity for us to find out a little bit more about whether you are suited for and how you interact with others, handle pressure etc. Its just another part of the process and will be sent out via email for you to complete on line and send back to the recruitment team.

Second Interviews

Estimated days since job closing 14-16

Having a 2nd interview depends on the role and the hiring managers. 2nd interviews are usually done to give you more insight into the role and also an opportunity to meet the next level of management. Your recruiter will take you through all of the detail well ahead of the interview to make sure you feel prepared and ready to do your best.

References

Estimated time for these to be completed from time job has closed 16-20

Getting to reference stage usually means you are either preferred or one of two preferred candidates selected to fill the role. Ideally we would like to complete reference checks within 2-3 days of completing interviews, We always look to complete two references, and require two referees who you have reported to in your most recent jobs.

Job Offer

Congratulations!

We would like to offer you the role, at offer stage you'll be contacted by phone by either the recruiter or the hiring manager to discuss salary, benefits, start date, all the things you need to clear up before you start in your new role. Once you've accepted, your details will be sent through to our HR coordinators to organise all the paperwork to be sent out to you. You should receive your new starter pack and employment agreement within 5 working days of verbal offer. Try and send your employment agreement back to us at least 5 days before you start so that we can organise your access, computer etc and have that ready for you on your first day.

Welcome aboard we hope you enjoy your journey with us!
